TrefBox was developed as a hypermarket in the 1970s and forms the historical part of Trefcenter retail park in Venlo. At the time, the hypermarket was a revolutionary concept that attracted visitors from far and wide to Venlo. In the 1980s and late 1990s, Trefcenter was expanced with the addition of several new buildings and grew to 60,000 square metres of retail space.
Over time, the hypermarket concept lost its appeal and TrefBox was operated by various retail concepts, each with a large supermarket as the main concept in the building. However, the strength Trefcenter’s location was not sufficiently utilized and the building became very outdated, both inside and out.
Despite its weaknesses, typically a location that makes our hearts beat faster. And so it is with great enthusiasm that we have joined forces with Mitiska REIM to use our expertise to put this once-beloved shopping location on the map again.
TrefBox experienced an extreme makeover in 2025, which completely transformed it within a period of just seven months. New main entrances, combined with a completely new layout of the building, ensure that TrefBox is once again the heart of the Trefcenter retail park. What’s more, it now functions as a real connector between the northern and southern parts of Trefcenter.
The new central corridor, allong which all shops are located, has a warm, contemporary look thanks to the use of natural materials. The shopping corridor connects in a clear and logical way to the pedestrian walkways of the car park.
Creating a highly sustainable shopping centre has been a key component of the renovation plans, which included replacement of outdated HVAC installations and significantly improving the building’s insulation. Following the installation of PV panels on the roof, the building will receive an A++++ label and BREEAM Very Good certification. Which makes TrefBox more than ready for a sustainable future in line with CRREM (Paris Proof) objectives.
The new retail offering includes a mix of national and international chains and is characterized by an extensive convenience offering. The new offering fits in seamlessly with the visitor profile of TrefBox, which has a strong regional origin, including a substantial German clientele. In addition to the retail offering, the food & beverage options on Trefcenter have been boosted by the opening of several new food & beverage operators in TrefBox.
The transformation of TrefBox into a future-proof and sustainable shopping centre is a joint project of Everglow Real Estate and Mitiska REIM.
